Jazz on a Summer Evening

Will Todd’s upbeat setting of the Latin Mass for choir, solo soprano and jazz ensemble reflects his ‘double life’ as a classical composer and jazz musician. Written in 2003, the Mass in Blue was an immediate success with choirs and audiences alike. It is a brilliant fusion of pure jazz and blues with clear, strong choral writing, against which the piano, soprano and alto sax weave and blend in a delightful aural tapestry. After an introduction from the quartet the work follows the traditional structure of the Mass, but with the addition of an unexpectedly joyful ending.

In the second half of the concert the choir, soprano and quartet will present a selection of favourites from the Great American Songbook, including Ain’t misbehavin’, I got rhythm, Every time we say goodbye and Over the rainbow.
